As the spirit of Christmas fills the air, the 14th Ethugalpura International Rating Chess Championship continuously heats up the chessboard with brilliance and excitement. Day 2 carried a perfect blend of festive cheer and fierce competition as rounds 3 and 4 came packed with thrilling moments, proving once again why this event stands out as one of the most loved chess traditions in Sri Lanka.

The ranking crosstable after Round 4 paints a vivid picture of how the leaderboard shifted dramatically today. The strategic brilliance of E D S Chandula (Rtg: 1787) propelled him to the top spot, showcasing an impeccable performance. Not far behind, Sandharu Ruvin Jayasooriya (Rtg: 1703) displayed unwavering determination, securing the second position. Meanwhile, Rashmika Yasindu Perera Jayod (Rtg: 1948) held steady in third, demonstrating both resilience and skill. With D D L N Dandeniya – Rtg: 1843, and Dorison Jude Gnanaseelan – Rtg: 1806, the fight is far from over as they drew with 4 points each.

Surprises and twists marked the rounds of the day, and players were very tactically enlightened, cool as cucumbers under fire, with their moves making this one of the most thrilling championships ever held in Sri Lanka’s chess calendar. The frequent changes across the top could be a pointer to the level of competitiveness the field holds, and everybody awaits the round of battles that will ensue in the subsequent rounds.

Adding to this excitement was the Blitz Event today, which proved to be a whirlwind of speed and precision. Players amazed spectators with their light-speed calculations and daring sacrifices. To get an account of this Blitz Event, read our article exclusively on https://ethugalpura.chesssl.com

Blitz Event Highlight for Arbiters and Parents

Another heartwarming and thrilling moment will be the Blitz Event for Arbiters and Parents, which is scheduled for tomorrow. This also points to the spirit of comaraderie and inclusivity with which each Ethugalpura Championship is held. This is to remind one that chess is about community, shared passion, and the love of the game, not just competition.

This will no doubt be a fun, full-of-memorable-games, and somewhat surprising Blitz Event with its relaxed yet competitive atmosphere.
