18th Asian Schools Chess Championships 2024: Sri Lanka’s Aspiring Chess Stars Ready to Compete.

The 18th Asian Schools Chess Championships 2024 is set to take place from 1st to 11th December 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand. Organised by the Thailand Chess Association under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation (ACF) and the International Chess Federation (FIDE), this prestigious event will showcase the talent of young chess players across Asia.  

The tournament will feature competitions in Open and Girls categories for the following age groups: Under 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, and 17 years. Players will compete across three formats:  

  1. Standard Chess  
  2. Rapid Chess  
  3. Blitz Chess  

 

Awards and Titles  

The championship offers not only trophies, medals, and certificates but also the opportunity to earn coveted FIDE titles based on performance.  

FM/WFM Titles:  

Awarded to Gold medalists in the U13, U15, and U17 Open/Girls categories, provided a FIDE rating of FM 2100/WFM 1900 has been achieved.  

CM/WCM Titles:  

Awarded to Silver and Bronze medalists in the U13, U15, and U17 Open/Girls categories.  

Awarded to Gold, Silver, and Bronze medalists in the U7, U9, and U11 Open/Girls categories, provided a FIDE rating of CM 2000/WCM 1800 has been achieved.  

Sri Lanka’s Participation  

Sri Lanka will be represented by 57 young players competing across various age groups. This strong contingent underscores the nation’s growing focus on developing chess talent and fostering international success.

Under 09 Open

Under 13 Open

FA Sampath Jayawardana (FA) is the head of the delegation and Mr Mahesh Ranaweera is the Manager of the Sri Lankan contingent.

The championship not only provides a platform for competition but also fosters skill development and international camaraderie. The young players of Sri Lanka will aim to showcase their talent and bring home honours, inspiring future generations of chess enthusiasts.
