48th National Sports Games 2024 – Chess

North Western Province emerged as the men’s champions and Southern Province clinched the women’s title in the Chess Championships at the 48th National Sports Games 2024.

The event took place from June 26 to 30, 2024, at the Sports Ministry Pavilion, Torrington Square, Colombo 07. Organized by the Ministry of Sports, the championships featured separate men’s and women’s categories, each with a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move.

In the men’s championship, nine teams representing nine provinces competed in a nine-round round-robin event. The North Western Province team secured the championship with an impressive 16 match points, remaining unbeaten throughout the event. The Sabaragamuwa Province team claimed the first runners-up position with 14 match points, while the Western Province team secured the second runners-up position with 13 match points.

In the women’s championship, eight teams from nine provinces competed in a seven-round round-robin event. The Southern Province team won the championship with 14 match points, remaining unbeaten throughout the event. The Central Province team finished as the first runners-up with 12 match points, and the Western Province team secured the second runners-up position with 10 match points.

Harsha Madushanka of the Southern Province men’s team was recognised as the best male player of the tournament, while WCM K M Dahamdi Sanudula of the Western Province women’s team was awarded the best female player of the tournament.
