Sri Lanka Inter-University Chess Championship 2024

Sri Lanka Inter-University Chess Championship 2024: Triumphs for the University of Moratuwa and the University of Peradeniya. 

The Sri Lanka Inter-University Chess Championship 2024 concluded with the University of Moratuwa claiming victory in the men’s championship and the University of Peradeniya emerging as champions in the women’s championship. The prestigious event took place from 6th to 8th December 2024 at the University of Visual & Performing Arts, Colombo.  

Organized as separate men’s and women’s championships, the tournament followed a five-round Swiss format with a time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment per move.  

The men’s championship witnessed intense competition among 16 teams. The University of Moratuwa displayed remarkable consistency, finishing the tournament undefeated with a perfect score of 10/10 match points. The University of Peradeniya secured the first runners-up position with 8/10 match points. Two teams—University of Kelaniya and University of Jaffna—tied for the second runners-up position with 7/10 match points. Using game points as the tiebreaker, the University of Kelaniya claimed the second runners-up spot, while the University of Jaffna finished in fourth place.

The women’s championship also featured 16 teams, showcasing fierce competition. The University of Peradeniya clinched the title with 9/10 match points, remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament.  Two teams tied for the runners-up position with 8/10 match points. Based on game points as the tiebreaker, the University of Kelaniya emerged as the first runners-up, while the University of Moratuwa secured the second runners-up position.

The success of these universities was attributed to the dedication and skill of their players, highlighting the synergy between academic excellence and extracurricular prowess.  

Congratulations to all the participants, especially the winning teams, for their outstanding performances. Their achievements underscore the growing prominence of chess within Sri Lankan academia.
