All Island School Games Chess Championships 2025 Concludes with Outstanding Performances

The All Island School Games Chess Championships 2025 took place from September 20-22, 2025, at Prince College, New Town, Ratnapura. Organised by the Sports and Physical Education Branch of the Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka, the championships featured four competitive categories and were conducted under a six-round Swiss system format for teams. Tournament Director Lt. Col. G G Anura Abeywickrama oversaw the event, with International Arbiters Sanjeewa Anuradha and Naditha Amarakoon serving as Chief Arbiters. All games followed a standard time control of 90 minutes with a 30-second increment per move from move one per player.

Under 17 Boys’ Championship

The Under 17 Boys category saw participation from 20 teams. Rahula College, Matara emerged victorious with 10 match points, securing five wins and one loss across six rounds. Maliyadeva College claimed the first runners-up position with 10 match points, earning four wins and two draws. Royal College – Colombo 07 finished third with 9 match points after recording four wins, one draw, and one loss.

Second Runners-up – Royal College – Colombo 07:

  6. Thisum Laknuja De Silva

Under 20 Boys’ Championship

In the Under 20 Boys category, 15 teams competed for the championship. Maliyadeva College dominated the tournament with an impressive 11 match points, achieving five wins and one draw. Cp/K/ Darmaraja College secured second place with 10 match points after recording five wins and one loss. Rahula College, Matara claimed third place with 8 match points.

Under 17 Girls’ Championship

The Under 17 Girls’ championship featured 22 teams in a highly competitive field. Visakha Vidyalaya – Colombo achieved a perfect tournament, winning all six rounds with 12 match points to claim the championship. MR/Sujatha Vidyalaya finished as first runners-up with 10 match points, recording five wins and one loss. Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya – Kiribathgoda secured third place with 8 match points.

Champion Team – Visakha Vidyalaya – Colombo:

Second Runners-up – Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya – Kiribathgoda:

  3. Harini Laknara Abeysooriya
  4. WFM R M Dulinma Hemalni Rathnayake
  5. E A Hesandi Avinya
  6. J Y Jayathissa

Under 20 Girls’ Championship

The Under 20 Girls’ category concluded with 18 participating teams. Visakha Vidyalaya – Colombo 05 delivered another flawless performance, achieving a perfect 12 match points with six wins. Girls’ High School, Kandy secured the first runners-up position with 8 match points after four wins and two losses. MR/Sujatha Vidyalaya claimed third place, also with 8 match points, but separated by tie-breaks.

Tournament Highlights

The championships showcased exceptional talent across all categories, with Visakha Vidyalaya demonstrating remarkable consistency by winning both the Under 17 and Under 20 Girls’ categories with perfect scores. Maliyadeva College and its affiliated schools showed strong representation, with victories in both the Under 17 and Under 20 Boys’ divisions. The tournament provided a valuable platform for young chess talents to compete at the highest school level in Sri Lanka, contributing to the development of chess in educational institutions nationwide.
