The Jaffna District Chess Association has announced the participation of several titled and high-rated players from India and Sri Lanka for the upcoming Jaffna International Chess Championship 2025, which will be held from November 30 to December 4 at Chelva Palace, Jaffna. With a strong lineup of international and local stars, this year’s tournament promises to be one of the most competitive and exciting chess events ever organised in the Northern Province.
IM Rajdeep Sarkar (ELO 2357) – The Strategic Maestro from Kolkata
International Master Rajdeep Sarkar, hailing from Kolkata, India, will be one of the headline players in this year’s championship. Known for his deep positional understanding and creative middle-game play, Rajdeep has consistently been among India’s most promising young talents. With a peak rating above 2350 and several strong performances in Indian and international circuits, his presence in Jaffna adds both prestige and competitive intensity to the event. Players and spectators alike are eager to witness his masterful endgame skills and calm over-the-board demeanour that make him a true professional.

IM Subhayan Kundu (ELO 2352) – The Rising Star of Indian Chess
Another notable confirmation comes from International Master Subhayan Kundu, who has steadily climbed the FIDE ranks with a current rating of 2352. Representing the next generation of India’s chess excellence, Subhayan is recognised for his tactical sharpness and resilience under pressure. Having achieved success in several All-India FIDE-rated tournaments, his journey to Jaffna is expected to inspire young Sri Lankan players aiming to compete on the global stage. Subhayan’s inclusion ensures that spectators can look forward to some electrifying battles at the top boards.

FM Dinesh Rajan M (ELO 2349) – The Consistent Performer from Chennai
FIDE Master Dinesh Rajan M, a consistent and disciplined player from Chennai, will also be competing in the Jaffna International. With a FIDE rating of 2349, Dinesh brings valuable international experience, having participated in numerous prestigious events across India and Southeast Asia. His solid opening repertoire and calm strategic play make him a formidable opponent for any grandmaster-level competitor. WCM Shanmathi Sree S (ELO 2001) – The Young Talent from Tamil Nadu
Adding youthful energy to the lineup is Woman Candidate Master Shanmathi Sree S, one of Tamil Nadu’s brightest teenage chess stars. With an Elo rating of 2001, Shanmathi represents a new wave of talented Indian women breaking barriers in competitive chess. Her participation highlights the inclusiveness of the Jaffna International, which continues to provide a platform for both emerging and established players. CM Sivathanujan S (ELO 2085) – Jaffna’s Local Hope
Sri Lanka’s Candidate Master Sivathanujan S, rated 2085, will proudly represent the local talent pool at this international event. A Grand Stage for 800 Players
In addition to these confirmed players, organisers have hinted at the possible participation of Grandmasters and International Masters from India, Malaysia, Nepal, and Bangladesh, further enhancing the tournament’s international appeal. Due to overwhelming interest, only 800 players will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, ensuring a well-managed and high-quality competition.
