Fischer Chess Club Dominates the Sri Lanka National Team Chess Championship 2025 – Super League

The Sri Lanka National Team Chess Championship 2025 – Super League took place from October 17th to 21st, 2025, at the Sports Ministry Pavilion, Torrington, Colombo 07. Organized by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka, the championship featured 10 teams competing in a highly competitive nine-round robin format. The tournament was conducted under standard time control of 90 minutes with a 30-second increment from move one.

Tournament Director IA G. Luxman Wijesuriya and Chief Arbiter IA H N Chathuranga Gunasena ensured smooth operations throughout the five-day event, which witnessed intense battles between some of Sri Lanka’s finest chess clubs.

Championship Results

Fischer Chess Club emerged as the undisputed champions, finishing with an impressive 15 match points and 38.5 game points. Their dominance was evident as they remained undefeated throughout the tournament, securing victories against most opponents and drawing only when necessary.

Läufer Chess Club claimed the runner-up position with 13 match points and 31.5 game points, showcasing consistent performances across all nine rounds. Their strong finish demonstrated the depth of talent within their squad.

The battle for third place was fiercely contested, with three teams tied on 11 match points. Sokians Chess Club secured the second runner-up position with 29.5 game points, edging out Kandyan Lions Chess Club (28.5 game points with superior tie-breaks) and The Glory of Kings Chess Club (28.5 game points).

Key Matches and Performances

The tournament featured several thrilling encounters. Fischer Chess Club’s 5-1 victory over Rahulians Chess Club in Round 10 was particularly dominant, while their narrow 3-3 draw against Läufer Chess Club in Round 2 proved to be one of the tournament’s most competitive matches.

The Glory of Kings Chess Club demonstrated their fighting spirit with a commanding 5-1 victory over Läufer Chess Club in Round 2, one of the most lopsided results of the championship. Sokians Chess Club also showed their strength with a 5-1 win against Navy Chess Club in Round 8.

Individual performances stood out throughout the competition. IM Himal Gusain from Fischer Chess Club delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 8.5 points out of 9 games. IM Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage of Läufer Chess Club also impressed with 7.5 points from 9 games, while CM D D L N Dandeniya from Kandyan Lions Chess Club scored an impressive 7.5 out of 9.

Complete Team Standings

The final standings saw Fischer Chess Club at the top, followed by Läufer Chess Club and Sokians Chess Club. Kandyan Lions Chess Club and The Glory of Kings Chess Club tied for fourth place with 11 match points each. Maroons Chess Club and Blue and Gold Chess Club both finished with 8 match points, placing sixth and seventh respectively. Navy Chess Club secured eighth place with 6 match points, while Anandians Chess Club and Rahulians Chess Club finished ninth and tenth with 4 and 3 match points respectively.

Individual Board Prizes

Outstanding individual performances were recognized with board prizes awarded to the top performers on each board:

Board 1: D M T Kashyapa Kulasekara (Fischer Chess Club) – 7 points from 9 games with a performance rating of 2182

Board 2: Chenitha Mithvidu Ovitigala (Maroons Chess Club) – 7 points from 9 games with a performance rating of 2133

Board 3: FM Dishal Nimsara Weerasekara (Fischer Chess Club) – 6 points from 8 games with a performance rating of 2116

Board 4: FM Pesandu Rashmitha Liyanage (Fischer Chess Club) – 6.5 points from 9 games with a performance rating of 2094

Board 5: IM Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage (Läufer Chess Club) – 7.5 points from 9 games with a performance rating of 2149

Board 6: IM Himal Gusain (Fischer Chess Club) – 8.5 points from 9 games with a performance rating of 2339

Board 7: IM Romesh Weerawardane (Fischer Chess Club) – 6 points from 9 games with a performance rating of 2056

Board 8: Jeewantha Aloka Hettiarachchi (Maroons Chess Club) – 7 points from 9 games with a performance rating of 2091

Fischer Chess Club dominated the board prizes, winning five out of eight boards, showcasing the exceptional depth and strength of their team throughout the tournament.
