Royal College Hosts Successful Multi-Category Youth Chess Championship

The Blue and Gold Chess Fiesta 2025 brought together Sri Lanka’s brightest young chess talents on December 20, 2025, at Royal College in Colombo 07. The tournament featured eight age categories with over 200 participants competing through five rounds of standard chess. Organized by Royal College with Tournament Director Mr. Naditha Amarakoon and Chief Arbiter IA Tharindu Weerasekara leading the officiating team, the championship was conducted as a 5-round Swiss system tournament with 90 minutes per game time control.

Under 7 Boys

Chaetha Dulsandu De silva dominated the Under 7 Boys category with a perfect score of 5 points out of 5 rounds. Sadew Prabashwara Bandara also achieved 5 points to claim second place, while Vihaan Saish secured third position with 4.5 points in the 70-player field.

Under 7 Girls 

Chanudi Nulara emerged victorious in the Under 7 Girls category with 5 points. Suheli Methumsa Fernando finished second with 4 points, and Senuki Yahansa claimed third place also with 4 points. The category featured 29 participants from leading schools across the country.

Under 8 Boys 

The Under 8 Boys section saw two players achieve perfect scores. Dinuga Ayodya Senavirathne (rated 1597) took first place with 5 points, while Sasmi Yasassri (rated 1588) finished second also with 5 points. Thenula Damsilu Nanawaththa claimed third with 4 points in the competitive 44-player field.

Under 8 Girls 

Vinuli Dilansa Perera dominated the Under 8 Girls category with a perfect 5 points. Nuthara Ramithri Wijeratne secured second place with 4 points, and Dinaya Damsuvi Binduhewa finished third also with 4 points among 28 participants.

Under 9 Boys 

Jenul Wewakumbura (rated 1539) captured the Under 9 Boys title with a perfect 5 points. Rokith Jayasinghearachchi (rated 1418) finished second with 4.5 points, and Mohamed Nuraiz Nizwer claimed third place with 4 points in the 33-player section.

Under 9 Girls 

 

Senuli Suhasna Arambegedara won the Under 9 Girls championship with 5 points. Dinudi Yesansa Erathna (rated 1535) took second place with 4.5 points, and Neha Shelina Imtiyas (rated 1406) secured third with 4 points among 17 talented competitors.

Under 11 Boys 

AFM Rivinu Dihas Nethmira Wickramage (rated 1776) claimed the Under 11 Boys title with 4.5 points. Vinuja Egodawatta (rated 1569) finished second also with 4.5 points, and Ravija Yuwandith Gunasekera (rated 1549) took third place with 4.5 points in the highly competitive 48-player field featuring multiple titled players.

Under 11 Girls 

Sarah Ahmed Aleenah emerged victorious in the Under 11 Girls category with a perfect 5 points. ACM Risali Dasanya (rated 1500) secured second place with 4.5 points, and Chithuli Damsiluni Panagoda (rated 1504) finished third with 4 points among 36 participants.

Tournament Excellence The Blue and Gold Chess Fiesta 2025 maintained excellent organizational standards throughout. The venue at Royal College, Colombo 07, provided excellent facilities for the large gathering of players, parents, and chess enthusiasts.

The 5-round Swiss format with 90-minute time control allowed young talents to demonstrate their abilities in quality games.

Congratulations to all participants, winners, and organizers for making the Blue and Gold Chess Fiesta 2025 a successful event that continues to serve as an important platform for youth chess development in Sri Lanka
