14th Mercantile/Government Services International Rating Chess Championship 2026 — Corporate Chess at Its Finest in Colombo
The 14th Mercantile/Government Services International Rating Chess Championship 2026 brought together Sri Lanka’s finest chess talent from the corporate and government sectors for four days of competitive FIDE-rated chess at the Police Families’ Welfare Association, Joseph Fraser Road, Colombo 05 from February 27 to March 2, 2026. Organized by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka, this prestigious annual event is one of the longest-running and most respected chess tournaments on the Sri Lankan calendar, and the 14th edition lived up to that tradition with an exciting and tightly contested competition throughout.
The tournament was directed by IA Erosh Jayasinghe, with IA H N Chathuranga Gunasena serving as Chief Arbiter, NA L D D Madusanka as Deputy Chief Arbiter, and DA Pradeep Weerasinghe as Arbiter. The event was played over 7 rounds under the Swiss System format, using the standard FIDE time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment per move from move 1, with full international rating calculation. The field averaged a rating of 1546 with an average age of 34 — a reflection of the experienced and seasoned players who make this tournament a unique fixture in the Sri Lankan chess calendar.
A Thrilling Race to the Top
The 14th edition produced one of the most competitive title races in the tournament’s history, with the championship only being decided on tie-break after the final round. Niranga Kandearachchi produced an outstanding campaign from start to finish, winning five of his seven games and drawing one to finish with 6 points and claim the title. His consistent and disciplined play throughout the seven rounds — never losing a game across the entire event — was the hallmark of a deserving champion.
H H Sasindu Lakshitha matched Kandearachchi’s 6 points exactly and pushed all the way to the end, finishing as runner-up on tie-break. Lakshitha’s campaign was built on aggressive and enterprising chess, winning five rounds and drawing one, and his final-round victory kept him level with the champion right up until the tie-break calculations were applied.
Third place went to C C Weerasinghe with 5.5 points — a strong performance from the highest-rated player in the field, entering at 1912, who showed his quality throughout despite narrowly missing out on a podium finish at the very top. Elath Mathanga De Silva, who had earlier claimed the Southern Province Majors title in this same cycle, added another impressive result to his 2026 record with 5.5 points and fourth place — demonstrating his remarkable consistency across multiple tournaments. Pasan Vindula Liyanapathirana and Krishna Rahul Jeyanthan both finished with 5.5 points for fifth and sixth places respectively, while T S Sheriff, K M Dumal Kavish Dipsara, Vishal Hewawasam, and AFM Harsha Madushanka completed the top ten — all finishing with 5.5 or 5 points in a fiercely competitive top half of the draw.
The Field Across Seven Rounds
What made the 14th Mercantile/Government Services Championship particularly special was the sheer breadth and diversity of the participating field. With 114 players competing across seven rounds and representing organizations from across Sri Lanka’s business and government landscape, the tournament captured everything that makes this event unique — experienced club players, government servants, corporate professionals, and titled players all competing on equal terms across the same boards.
Notable performances from further down the field included strong campaigns from Jayanga Kandearachchi, Menuka Udara, D Kalindu Deshappriya, I L K Tennakoon, and AFM Ruwan Prasanka Weerasinghe, all finishing with 5 points and underlining the depth of the field from top to bottom. WFM H Pevinya Peiris was the top women’s finisher with 4.5 points, a commendable result in a mixed and experienced open field.
The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka deserves great credit for once again delivering a well-organized and professionally run Mercantile/Government Services Championship. Tournament Director IA Erosh Jayasinghe, Chief Arbiter IA H N Chathuranga Gunasena, Deputy Chief Arbiter NA L D D Madusanka, and Arbiter DA Pradeep Weerasinghe ensured that all seven rounds were conducted smoothly and efficiently at the Colombo venue.
