The Mind Plus Chess Extravaganza 2026 delivered a wonderful celebration of junior chess in the Gampaha District, with young players competing across nine age-group categories from Under-7 all the way to the Open section. Organised by Knights Flame Chess Club, the event brought together boys and girls from across the Gampaha District for an exciting day of competitive chess, with most categories played over five rounds under the Swiss System format. Results were uploaded by Knights Flame Chess Club.
Under-7 Girls (2019 & After)
D M Thenuji Thehasna Dissanayaka claimed the Under-7 Girls title with 4.5 points from 5 rounds — a composed and impressive performance from the youngest girls’ category. Shayeli Aanya Abeysiriwardena finished as runner-up with 4 points, while S A D Aiana Miheli Solanga took third place with 3 points in a competitive Under-7 Girls field.
Under-7 Open (2019 & After)
W Vihas Washishwara delivered a dominant performance to claim the Under-7 Open title with a perfect 4 points from the round robin format, finishing as a clear and unbeaten champion. R J K Rajarathna finished as runner-up with 2.5 points, while S A Hiruka Sasmitha Subesingha took third place with 2 points.
Under-9 Girls (2017 & 2018)
W Resandi Anudula claimed the Under-9 Girls title with 4 points from 5 rounds, finishing as a deserving champion in a competitive category. R M Dulyana Dahamdee Rathnayake and K H Thenuwanya Samiddhi Rajakaruna both finished as joint runners-up with 4 points on tie-break — all three players separated only by the finest of margins at the top of the Under-9 Girls section.
Under-9 Open (2017 & 2018)
Gangul Damdhaja Rathnayaka claimed the Under-9 Open title with 4 points from 5 rounds — a strong performance from the top-rated player in the field at 1499. D P Shenul Ashinsha finished as runner-up also with 4 points on tie-break, while ACM Gayuth Senitha Heiyanthuduwa took third place also on 4 points — three players separated only by tie-break in one of the most closely contested categories of the entire event. Notably, ACM Heiyanthuduwa was the highest-rated player in the category at 1542, making the tight three-way finish at the top all the more remarkable.
Under-11 Girls (2015 & 2016)
R Anugi Sehansa Wijesekara claimed the Under-11 Girls title with 3 points from the round robin format, finishing as a deserving champion in the category. H P Chethakee Himahansi finished as runner-up with 3 points on tie-break, while A G Yashmi Yasindi took third place with 2 points.
Under-11 Open (2015 & 2016)
R K I Rajarathna claimed the Under-11 Open title with 4 points from 5 rounds — a consistent and composed campaign throughout the event. D Dulain Vihanga De Silva finished as runner-up also with 4 points on tie-break, while R Anuga Suwahas Wijesekara took third place also with 4 points in another remarkably tight finish at the top of the Under-11 Open section, with three players all finishing on 4 points separated only by tie-break.
Under-13 Girls (2013 & 2014)
The Under-13 Girls category was played as a round robin over 3 rounds, with W R A S S Rathnayake claiming the title with 2 points. H K S Sanudini finished as runner-up with 1 point, while W M Vinudi Hasanya Warnakulasooriya completed the podium in third place.
Under-13 Open (2013 & 2014)
Dinada Akein Vandabona — who has been making his mark consistently on the junior chess circuit throughout 2026 — claimed the Under-13 Open title with an impressive 4.5 points from 5 rounds, finishing as the dominant champion of the category. Dion Insith Fernando finished as runner-up with 4 points, while Sayul Nethvin Abeysinghe took third place also with 4 points on tie-break. ACM Venusha Damsiluna Sirimanna and Hirun Sithmina Chandrasiri both finished with 3.5 points for fourth and fifth places respectively in a high-quality Under-13 Open section.
Open (2012 & Before)
G D Komindu Dahamsath Gamage delivered an impressive campaign to claim the Open section title with 4.5 points from 5 rounds — the standout performance of the most senior category at the Mind Plus Chess Extravaganza 2026. D Binul Demitha De Silva finished as runner-up with 3.5 points, while Nimsha Mayumi Wijesingha took third place with 3 points in a competitive Open section that featured several of the Gampaha District’s most experienced rated players.
