An inspiring autism-friendly chess tournament was successfully organized by Mind Plus International Chess Academy during the 15th Ethugalpura International Rated Championship, a mega tournament held from December 18th to 23rd, 2025, in Kurunegala. With support from the FIDE Infinite Chess Programme and under the supervision of Maria, this special event demonstrated the transformative power of chess for children on the autism spectrum.

Chess offers unique benefits for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The game naturally develops critical cognitive skills including concentration, pattern recognition, and strategic thinking in a structured, predictable environment. Unlike many social activities, chess provides clear rules and sequential thinking processes that align well with how many autistic children process information. It builds confidence through measurable progress while offering a calm, focused setting that reduces sensory overload.

The tournament was carefully designed with inclusivity at its core, creating a safe, supportive, and sensory-considerate environment tailored specifically to the needs of participants with autism. Seven dedicated players competed in this inaugural stage, each demonstrating remarkable focus and determination.

The interim results, based on the Swiss-Manager pairing system, showcased impressive performances: Arabepitiya R. Bhanuka C. claimed first place with 5 points, followed by Mallikarachchi Ehas L. with 3½ points in second, and Ameesha Kiwein with 3 points in third. Bothuju Lithula N. and Shehansa Tenuki shared fourth place with 2½ points each, while Karunarathne Nuwi S. earned 2 points and Newinka Aanya L. scored 1½ points.

A special highlight was the participation of a model queen who motivated players throughout the event and personally presented medals during the prize-giving ceremony, creating memorable moments for all participants. The tournament prioritized flexibility and individual support, allowing each player to compete at their own comfortable pace.

Parents and guardians provided overwhelmingly positive feedback, recognizing the value of such inclusive sporting opportunities. The event’s success has sparked significant interest from leading autism-focused institutions eager to collaborate in future tournaments.

Mind Plus International Chess Academy remains committed to expanding these initiatives, recognizing chess as a powerful tool for inclusion, personal development, and empowerment within the autism community.
