In the second round of the DINI International Chess Championship 2024, Sivanathan Sivathanujan (ELO 1968) secured a remarkable victory against GM Das Sayantan (ELO 2491)

Opening Phase:

The game began with the Caro-Kann Defense (1. e4 c6), a solid and popular choice by Black. White’s early 4. h3 led to an exchange of the bishop pair, giving White a slight initiative. The opening moves developed into a typical pawn structure, with White having active pieces and control of the center.

Middle Game:

White continued to press with aggressive play, particularly on the kingside. Key moves included 19. Bxe7 and 20. Rxe5, which opened up the center. White’s coordinated attack, featuring pawn advances and precise piece placement, led to significant pressure on Black’s position. The move 28. d5 marked the start of a strong initiative by White, leading to tactical opportunities.

Endgame:

White’s relentless pressure paid off as material sacrifices opened lines towards the Black king. The final stages saw accurate maneuvers by White, such as 33. Qh3 and 35. Nxf5, creating an unstoppable attack. Black’s defensive resources were exhausted, and the game concluded with White delivering checkmate.

Key Moments:

  1. Opening: The exchange on f3 early on and White’s control of the center.
  2. Middle Game: White’s strategic pawn advances (h4, f4, g4) and piece activity.
  3. Endgame: Sacrificial play to maintain the initiative and deliver a decisive checkmate.

Summary:

Sivathanujan S played a well-coordinated and aggressive game, utilizing both tactical precision and strategic foresight. His ability to open lines and exploit weaknesses in Das Sayantan’s position was instrumental in securing a memorable victory. This game showcases the power of active piece play and the importance of seizing the initiative.
