Gihan Kanchana De Silva, a seasoned FIDE Instructor, is widely recognised as one of the most popular and highly qualified chess trainers in Sri Lanka. With over 17 years of dedicated experience since beginning his coaching journey in 2008, Gihan has become a central figure in nurturing the next generation of elite chess talent in the country.

Gihan’s own chess journey began in the year 2000, when he received a chessboard from his uncle, a gift that ignited a lifelong passion. Inspired by a deep desire to give back to his alma mater, Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda, he transitioned into coaching shortly after his competitive years. Today, he trains a wide range of players, from promising unrated talents to national and international champions, and takes particular interest in developing rated and competitive youth players.
His impact as a coach is reflected in the remarkable achievements of his students. Notably, FM Sasith Nipun Piyumantha, Gihan’s first student, became Sri Lanka’s first school-level FIDE Master and Asian Youth Champion. He has also guided WFM Dasuni Mendis, a two-time National Champion and World Schools Blitz medalist; WCM Dahamdi Sanujula, the U18 Commonwealth Blitz Champion and former Women’s National Champion; and WCM Esandi Newansa, a consistent podium finisher in major Asian and Commonwealth events. Several of his students, including Sethumlee Palliyage, who became the Western Asian Youth Champion in 2024 and is eligible for the Woman FIDE Master (WFM) title, and WCM Sayuni Jayaweera, Sri Lanka’s first and only Commonwealth Women’s Champion in the women’s category, have made history with international titles and national triumphs.
Gihan’s coaching philosophy focuses on building a solid foundation in tactics, positional understanding, and endgames. He integrates modern teaching tools such as chess software and online platforms to make learning more effective and personalised. His commitment to his students goes beyond chess performance; he places great importance on psychological resilience, balancing competitive pressure with enjoyment of the game.

He remains passionate about the transformative power of chess, recognising its ability to enhance critical thinking, concentration, discipline, and patience. His students benefit not just from his deep technical knowledge but also from his mentorship, integrity, and vision.
Despite the challenges he faces, particularly the academic pressures on students and the lack of sponsorship in Sri Lankan chess, Gihan remains focused on his long-term goals: producing a Grandmaster and having five of his students represent the national team.
A vocal advocate for improving the standard of chess coaching in Sri Lanka, Gihan encourages fellow trainers to evolve continually, emphasising that in today’s dynamic world, understanding children’s psychology is as crucial as mastering chess theory. As a coach who constantly updates his knowledge and training methods, he exemplifies adaptability and dedication.
To the broader chess community, Gihan offers a simple yet powerful message: “Chess is more than just a game — it’s a journey of discipline, patience, and continuous learning. Support each other, stay humble in victory, resilient in defeat, and always play with passion and respect.”
In a nation eager for global recognition in chess, A Gihan Kanachana stands out not only for his achievements but for his unwavering commitment to shaping champions and uplifting the sport at every level.
