Sri Lankan chess player WIM Oshini Gunawardhana has brought honor to her country by winning the Women’s Championship at the 23rd Capechecs Chess Tournament held in France. This remarkable achievement marks a significant milestone in her chess career and demonstrates the growing talent of Sri Lankan players on the international stage.

A Strong Performance in France

Oshini delivered an excellent performance at the tournament, scoring an impressive 6 points from 9 games. Starting from an initial rank of 140, she fought her way through tough competition to finish in 25th place overall while claiming the top spot in the women’s category. What makes this achievement even more special is that this was Oshini’s first time participating in a European open tournament.

The Challenge of European Chess

Playing chess in Europe presents significant challenges for any player. European open tournaments feature strong competition from players across the continent, many of whom have extensive experience in high-level international events. The playing conditions, time controls, and level of preparation required are demanding. For Oshini to win the women’s section in her debut European tournament shows her adaptability and competitive spirit. She handled the pressure well and demonstrated that she belongs among the best players in her category.

Building a Strong Chess Career

This victory in France is another milestone in Oshini’s developing chess career. She has been steadily improving her game and gaining valuable tournament experience. Her success at Capechecs demonstrates that her hard work and dedication are paying off. Each tournament provides learning opportunities, and competing against diverse playing styles helps strengthen her understanding of the game.

Under the guidance of her coach, FIDE Instructor Akila Kavinda, Oshini has been developing her chess skills systematically. A good coach plays a crucial role in identifying strengths, addressing weaknesses, and preparing players for competitive challenges. The strategic guidance and preparation provided by FI Akila Kavinda have been instrumental in shaping Oshini’s game and helping her achieve success at the international level.

The Growing Sri Lankan Chess

Oshini’s achievement reflects positively on Sri Lankan chess as a whole. When young players succeed internationally, it raises the profile of chess in the country and inspires the next generation. Sri Lanka has produced talented players over the years, and victories like this one help establish the nation’s presence in international chess circles.

The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka continues to support talented players, providing opportunities for them to compete and develop their skills. Wycherley International School has also played an important role in supporting Oshini’s chess development alongside her education, showing how academic institutions can nurture sporting talent.

Scoring 6 points from 9 games in a competitive European open tournament is a solid result. This score indicates consistent play with more wins than losses, showing that Oshini could handle the varied challenges posed by different opponents. In chess tournaments, maintaining focus across nine games requires mental stamina, emotional control, and consistent preparation. Her performance shows maturity beyond her experience level.

Her achievement serves as an inspiration to aspiring chess players across Sri Lanka, proving that dedication, proper coaching, and competitive opportunities can lead to international success. We eagerly anticipate Oshini’s future performances and wish her continued success in her chess career!
