The Glory of Kings Chess Club and Fischer Chess Club Triumph at the Sri Lanka National Team Chess Championships 2024

The Sri Lanka National Team Chess Championships 2024, organized by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka, concluded with thrilling victories by The Glory of Kings Chess Club in the Open Championship and Fischer Chess Club in the Women’s Championship. The event, held from 27th to 29th September 2024 at the Sanhinda Leisure Centre, gathered elite chess teams from across the nation. Teams that qualified from preliminary events participated in this prestigious tournament, competing for a cash prize fund of Rs 240,000.00 along with medals, certificates, and trophies. The championships followed a 5-round team Swiss format, with a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move.

Open Championship: The Glory of Kings Chess Club Dominates

In the Open Championship, 18 teams competed fiercely. The Glory of Kings Chess Club emerged victorious, scoring 10 match points and remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament, winning all five rounds. Their flawless performance secured them the championship title.

Stalwarts Chess Club claimed the first runners-up position with 8 match points, while Spassky Chess Club took the second runners-up spot with 7 match points, winning the tie-break over Black & Gold Chess Club, who had to settle for fourth place.

Women’s Championship: Fischer Chess Club Shines

In the Women’s Championship, 15 teams competed. Fischer Chess Club claimed the championship title, scoring 10 match points and winning all their matches without a single loss. Their remarkable consistency throughout the event earned them the top spot.

For the runners-up positions, Sokians – 20 Girls secured the first runners-up place with 8 match points, winning the tie-break over Mayor Chess Club – Girls, who also finished with 8 match points but were placed fourth due to game points.
