🇱🇰✨ Sri Lanka Shines with 11 Medals at the Commonwealth Chess Championship 2025! ♟️🏆

The Sri Lankan contingent delivered an outstanding performance at the Commonwealth Chess Championship 2025, held from November 9-16, 2025, at Corus KLCC, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Sri Lanka’s remarkable medal tally was highlighted by five outstanding Gold medal performances, showcasing the nation’s rising strength in youth chess. WFM K. M. Dahamdi Sanudula delivered an exceptional double triumph, securing Gold in both the Under-20 Girls’ Standard and Blitz championships, reaffirming her status as one of Sri Lanka’s most formidable young talents.

In the open categories, CM A. P. Chenitha Sihas Dinsara Karunasena of Nalanda College, Colombo, claimed Gold in the Under-10 Boys’ Standard event, demonstrating impressive tactical maturity and refined endgame mastery. Adding to Sri Lanka’s dominance, T. H. D. Thisarindu Induwara of Royal College, Colombo, clinched Gold in the Under-16 Open Blitz, while B. P. Chanthuli Thanishka De Silva of Anula Vidyalaya, Nugegoda, captured Gold in the Under-14 Girls’ Blitz, further solidifying Sri Lanka’s position as a regional powerhouse in youth chess.

The four Silver medals showcased the team’s depth across age groups, with T H D Thisarindu Induwara from Royal College, Colombo excelling in Boys Under-16 Standard; B P Chanthuli Thanishka De Silva from Anula Vidyalaya, Nugegoda delivering a stellar performance in Girls Under-14 Standard; V W A Vinuda Vidmal Wickramasinghe from Boswell College International, Kalutara dominating the Boys Under-14 Standard category; and CM Vinuka Dihain Wijerathna from Royal College, Colombo claiming Silver in the Under-18 Blitz. The Bronze medals were equally impressive, with Kevon Dulkith Basnayake from Sumedha College, Gampaha finishing third in Boys Under-08 Standard, and CM Vinuka Dihain Wijerathna adding another medal to his collection with Bronze in Boys Under-12 Standard, demonstrating remarkable versatility across multiple age categories and formats.

Sri Lankan Player Performances

Open Championship

IM Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage finished 19th with 5.5 points,

WFM K M Dahamdi Sanudula placed 29th with 5 points,

Dhanushka Bandara finished 33rd with 5 points,

CM W D Malisha Sasvidu Weerathungalage placed 54th with 4.5 points,

WFM M Esandi Newansa

finished 57th with 4.5 points, and AFM Chandra Sudarman S. Pitigala placed 61st with 4 points.

Top 3 Finishers: 1st – GM Daniel Howard Fernandez (England) 7.5 points, 2nd – FM Arjun Adireddy (India) 7 points, 3rd – GM M R Lalit Babu (India) 7 points.

Girls Under-08

AFM Kajishana Tharshan finished 5th with 5 points, performing well in her category.

Top 3 Finishers: 1st – Anaya Sharma (India) 8 points, 2nd – Anvi Deepak Hinge (India) 8 points, 3rd – Teesha Byadwal (India) 7 points.

Girls Under-10

Sri Lanka did not have participants in this category.

Top 3 Finishers: 1st – Vanshika Rawat (India) 8 points, 2nd – Maha A/P Nathan (Malaysia) 7.5 points, 3rd – Kiyanna Parihaar (India) 7 points.

Girls Under-12

Risali Lohasna Jayaweera finished 4th with 5.5 points, showing excellent fighting spirit.

Top 3 Finishers: 1st – WCM Divi Bijesh (India) 8.5 points, 2nd – Liew Tze Yu (Singapore) 8 points, 3rd – Daniel Suria (Australia) 7 points.

Girls Under-14

B P Chanthuli Thanishka De Silva finished 2nd with 8 points, delivering an excellent performance, and Vinudi Dahamsa Madduma Patabendi placed 11th with 4.5 points.

Top 3 Finishers: 1st – Aditri Shome (India) 8.5 points, 2nd – B P Chanthuli Thanishka De Silva (Sri Lanka) 8 points, 3rd – WFM Saranya Devi Narahari (India) 7.5 points.

Girls Under-16

K P K Hesara Gunasekara finished 4th with 6 points, showing strong tactical play.

Top 3 Finishers: 1st – FM Prishita Gupta (India) 8.5 points, 2nd – Ananya Raman (India) 8 points, 3rd – Aswinika Mani R (India) 7 points.

Girls Under-18

Shasrutha Sutharshan finished 7th with 5 points, Lihini Dissanayake placed 8th with 5 points, and AFM Nemindi Linaya Ramanayake finished 9th with 4.5 points.

Top 3 Finishers: 1st – Siya Sagar (India) 7.5 points, 2nd – WCM Anupam M Sreekumar (India) 7.5 points, 3rd – WCM Omnia Binta Yusuf Lubaba (Bangladesh) 6 points.

Boys Under-08

Kevon Dulkith Basnayake finished 3rd with 6.5 points, and ACM Chesandu Yuven Aththanayaka placed 4th with 6 points.

Top 3 Finishers: 1st – Muhammad Aariz Daniel Bin Mohd Shahrul (Malaysia) 7 points, 2nd – Prayank Gaonkar (India) 6.5 points, 3rd – Kevon Dulkith Basnayake (Sri Lanka) 6.5 points.

Boys Under-10

CM Chenitha Sihas Dinsara Karunasena won 1st place with 7.5 points, displaying excellent tactical skills and endgame technique.

Top 3 Finishers: 1st – CM Chenitha Sihas Dinsara Karunasena (Sri Lanka) 7.5 points, 2nd – Parv H Hakani (India) 7.5 points, 3rd – Nidhish Shyamal (India) 6.5 points.

Boys Under-12

CM Vinuka Dihain Wijerathna finished 3rd with 7 points, and Thehas Rithmitha Kiringoda placed 4th with 6.5 points.

Top 3 Finishers: 1st – CM Madhvendra Pratap Sharma (India) 9 points, 2nd – AFM Aaradhya Suyog Bagul (Singapore) 7 points, 3rd – CM Vinuka Dihain Wijerathna (Sri Lanka) 7 points.

Boys Under-14

Vinuda Vidmal Wickramasinghe finished 2nd with 7.5 points, demonstrating strong competitive play.

Top 3 Finishers: 1st – AIM Adhiraj Mitra (India) 8 points, 2nd – Vinuda Vidmal Wickramasinghe (Sri Lanka) 7.5 points, 3rd – FM Reyan Md. (India) 7 points.

Boys Under-16

T H D Thisarindu Induwara finished 2nd with 7.5 points, showing excellent form throughout.

Top 3 Finishers: 1st – IM Akshay Borgaonkar (India) 8 points, 2nd – T H D Thisarindu Induwara (Sri Lanka) 7.5 points, 3rd – CM Ragavesh Velavaa (India) 6.5 points.

Boys Under-18

AFM Yonal Sumanathilake finished 6th with 5 points, and CM K K Dinujaya Kodithuwakku placed 7th with 4 points.

Top 3 Finishers: 1st – IM Adarsh Uppala Sriram (India) 9 points, 2nd – Devarsh M Borkhetariya (India) 6 points, 3rd – Aiesec Lee Tsuen Jin (Singapore) 6 points.

Blitz Open Championship

IM Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage finished 7th with 7 points, WFM K M Dahamdi Sanudula placed 21st with 6 points, CM W D Malisha Sasvidu Weerathungalage finished 46th with 4.5 points, WFM M Esandi Newansa placed 53rd with 4 points, AFM Chandra Sudarman S. Pitigala finished 58th with 4 points, and Dhanushka Bandara placed 75th with 3 points.

Top 3 Finishers: 1st – GM Mitrabha Guha (India) 8 points, 2nd – GM Deep Sengupta (India) 7.5 points, 3rd – GM Nikhil P Shyaam (India) 7 points.

Blitz Under-18

CM Vinuka Dihain Wijerathna finished 2nd with 8 points, CM Chenitha Sihas Dinsara Karunasena placed 5th with 7.5 points, T H D Thisarindu Induwara finished 12th with 7 points, Thehas Rithmitha Kiringoda placed 15th with 7 points, B P Chanthuli Thanishka De Silva finished 56th with 6 points, CM K K Dinujaya Kodithuwakku placed 57th with 5.5 points, AFM Yonal Sumanathilake finished 59th with 5.5 points, Kevon Dulkith Basnayake placed 72nd with 5.5 points, AFM Kajishana Tharshan finished 76th with 5.5 points, K P K Hesara Gunasekara placed 78th with 5 points, Vinuda Vidmal Wickramasinghe finished 8th with 7.5 points, Vinudi Dahamsa Madduma Patabendi placed 87th with 5 points, Lihini Dissanayake finished 128th with 4.5 points, AFM Nemindi Linaya Ramanayake placed 131st with 4.5 points, and Shasrutha Sutharshan finished 138th with 4.5 points.

Top 3 Finishers: 1st – CM Madhvendra Pratap Sharma (India) 8 points, 2nd – CM Vinuka Dihain Wijerathna (Sri Lanka) 8 points, 3rd – IM Akshay Borgaonkar (India) 8 points.

Overall Performance

Sri Lankan chess players achieved remarkable success with a total of 11 medals at the Commonwealth Chess Championship 2025

Additionally, several Sri Lankan players achieved impressive top-5 and top-10 finishes across multiple categories. The medal haul and consistent performances across all age groups demonstrate the depth and quality of Sri Lankan chess talent.
