The Inter University Chess Championships 2025 took place from September 18th to 21st, 2025 at Rajarata University of Sri Lanka. Organized by the Sri Lanka University Sports Association, the championships featured both Men’s and Women’s categories and were played under a six-round Swiss team format. Each game followed standard time control of 90 minutes with a 30-second increment from move 1.
In the Men’s Championship, a total of 16 teams competed fiercely for the top honors. University of Moratuwa emerged as the clear champions with a perfect record, winning all 6 matches to secure 12 match points. Their dominance was evident throughout the tournament as they remained unbeaten and showcased exceptional team coordination. University of Colombo claimed the first runner-up position with 10 match points after winning 5 matches and losing only 1. University of Peradeniya secured the second runner-up spot with 8 match points, having won 4 matches and lost 2.
The tournament witnessed several thrilling battles between university teams. The clash between University of Moratuwa and University of Colombo in round 3 saw Moratuwa prevail 4-2, with key wins from AIM R K T Dissanayake and IM G M H Thilakarathne. Another exciting encounter was the fourth round match between University of Moratuwa and University of Peradeniya, where Moratuwa won 4.5-1.5, demonstrating their superior preparation and tactical skills.
In the Women’s Championship, 16 teams participated in the competition. University of Peradeniya dominated the women’s section, topping the standings with 9 match points from 3 wins and 3 draws. University of Ruhuna secured the first runner-up position with 9 match points as well, but finished second on tie-break criteria after recording 4 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss. University of Sri Jayewardenepura claimed the second runner-up spot with 9 match points, having achieved 4 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss.

Tournament Officials
The championship was expertly managed under the direction of Tournament Director Mr. Samantha Upul Wijesinghe. IA Tharindu Weerasekara served as the Chief Arbiter, ensuring fair play and proper conduct throughout the tournament. FA T M Dilan Udayashantha supported as the Deputy Chief Arbiter, contributing to the smooth running of the event.
