Young Chess Stars Battle at 14th Inter-International School’s Chess Tournament 2025

Future chess champions showcased their talents at Wycherley International School Gampaha in an exciting two-day tournament.

The 14th Inter-International School’s Chess Tournament brought together young chess players from international schools across Sri Lanka on February 7-8, 2026. The tournament was held at Wycherley International School in Gampaha and featured six age categories, giving students from different age groups a chance to compete.

Tournament Details

The competition used a Swiss-System team format with five rounds. Players had 60 minutes per game with an additional 30 seconds added after each move. This timing system helped young players think carefully while keeping the games moving.

The tournament was organized by Chief Arbiter NA Fernando J M Marlon P and Arbiter NA Raheem Malik, who ensured fair play throughout the event.

Champions by Category

Under 8 (2017 and after): Lyceum International School Panadura won the championship with 10 points, showing strong teamwork. Leeds International School Panadura A secured second place with 8 points, followed by OKI International School in third.

Under 10 (2015/2016): Lyceum International School Nugegoda dominated this category with 10 points. Lyceum International School Wattala A finished second with 8 points, and Lyceum International School Rathnapura B took third place with the same score.

Under 12 (2013/2014): Lyceum International School Rathnapura B claimed victory with a perfect 10 points. The host school, Wycherley International School Gampaha A, earned second place with 8 points. Lyceum International School Rathnapura A finished third.

Under 14 (2011/2012): Both Lyceum International School Nugegoda and Lyceum International School Wattala B tied for first place with 9 points each. Lyceum International School Wattala A secured third position with 8 points.

Under 16 (2009/2010): Lyceum International School Wattala topped the standings with 9 points. Asian International School A finished second with 8 points, while Lyceum International School Rathnapura B and Royal Institute International School shared third place with 7 points each.

Under 19 (2006 and after): Horizon College International Malabe won the oldest category with 9 points. Lyceum International School Nugegoda A also scored 9 points to share top honors. Gateway College Colombo B earned third place.

A Successful Event

The tournament provided an excellent platform for young chess enthusiasts to test their skills and gain valuable competitive experience. Many schools participated with multiple teams across different age groups, showing the growing popularity of chess among Sri Lankan international schools.

The event highlighted the importance of chess in developing critical thinking, concentration, and sportsmanship among students. Congratulations to all participants and winners!
