Western Asian Junior/Girls Rapid Chess Championship 2024

FM Eldiyar Orozbaev of Kyrgyzstan and WFM Shubhi Gupta of India claimed the championships in the Western Asian Junior Rapid Chess Championship 2024

The Western Asian Junior/Girls Rapid Chess Championship 2024 took place on 22nd July 2024 at Citrus Waskaduwa, Kalutara, Sri Lanka. The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka organized the event under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation and FIDE. The championship featured Under 20 players from Western Asian Chess Federations (Zones 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, 3.7, and 3.8) affiliated with the Asian Chess Federation, competing in separate open and girls’ events. Both championships followed a 7-round Swiss format with a time control of 15 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move.

Open Championship

In the open category, 24 players competed. FM Eldiyar Orozbaev of Kyrgyzstan won the championship, scoring 6/7 points and remaining unbeaten throughout the event. FM Satbek Akhmedinov of Kazakhstan secured the first runner-up position with 5.5/7 points. Two players tied for the second runner-up position with 5/7 points: FM M D Imran of India and IM Susal De Silva of Sri Lanka. With superior tie breaks, FM M D Imran secured the second runner-up position, while Susal was placed fourth.

Girls Championship

In the girls’ category, 25 players competed. WFM Shubhi Gupta of India won the championship, scoring 5.5/7 points. Three players tied with 5.5/7 points, but Shubhi emerged victorious with better tie breaks. Mallick Mrittika of India and WFM V. Rindhiya of India secured the first and second runners-up positions, respectively. Notably, Indian players swept the top three positions in the girls’ category.
