Western Asian Junior/Girls Chess Championship 2024

IM Susal De Silva & WFM Devindya Oshini Gunawardhana emerged as the champions of the the Western Asian Junior Chess Championships 2024

The Western Asian Junior/Girls Chess Championship 2024 was held from 16th to 21st July 2024 at Citrus Waskaduwa, Kalutara, Sri Lanka. Organized by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation and FIDE, the championship featured Under 20 players from Western Asian Chess Federations (Zones 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, 3.7, and 3.8) affiliated with the Asian Chess Federation. The event was conducted in both open and girls’ categories separately, following a 9-round Swiss format with a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move.

Open Championship

In the open category, 24 players competed. IM Susal De Silva of Sri Lanka won the championship, scoring 7/9 points. He secured the title through a superior tie-break against FM Satbek Akhmedinov of Kazakhstan, who finished as the first runner-up. FM Reja Neer Manon of Bangladesh claimed the second runner-up position with 6.5/9 points.

Girls Championship

In the girls’ category, 31 players competed. WFM Devindya Oshini Gunawardhana of Sri Lanka won the championship, scoring 7/9 points. Mariya Kholyavko of Kazakhstan secured the first runner-up position through a tie-break, with WFM Galina Mikheeva of FIDE finishing as the second runner-up, both scoring 6.5/9 points.
